जिन आधारों पर परिवार की सुख-शांति निर्भर करती है, उनमें मुख्य है पति-पत्नी का सघन सहयोग। सौभाग्य से हमारे पश्चिमी देशों की अपेक्षा अधिक स्थिर और सुदृढ़ हैं। यहाँ माना जाता है कि बाप के घर से बेटी की डोली निकलती है तो पति के घर से ही उसकी अर्थी निकलेगी एक पत्नीव्रत और एक पतिव्रत भारतीय संस्कृति का आदर्श है, परम्परा है। इसी आधार पर पति-पत्नी के संबंध स्निग्ध, मधुर प्रेमपूर्ण रहते हैं। जबकि पश्चिमी देशों में सोते समय खर्राटे भरना भी तलाक का कारण बन जाता है। संभवतः ही वहाँ कोई ऐसा दंपति हो, जो कल के लिए एकदूसरे में आश्वस्त हों। जबकि भारतीय परिवारों में पति-पत्नी जीवन-मरण के साथी हैं।
